The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
