The English and Wales Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
